A wall. A farmhouse. Four homes.

Can Garcia is a house located at the southwest end of the historic center of Verges, attached to the medieval wall and the round tower of the Plaça Major, next to the stream that surrounds the old town.
Before its rehabilitation, it was a farmhouse organized into six crugies, intended exclusively for residential use and which, over the years, had been adapted to the different lifestyles of each era. At some point in its history, the last two crugies were segregated to accommodate an independent dwelling.

Traditionally, the ground floor was used for agricultural and storage purposes, while the first and second floors were the main dwelling, which had been transformed over time. The ground floor retained the barn structure typical of farmhouses, under a gabled roof oriented north to south.
The building had three facades. The main one, facing west, faced the street and allowed direct access to all the passages from the ground floor. The main access to the house was from the south facade, through a small courtyard open to the square and the stream, from where external stairs covered by a vegetable pergola connected to the terrace on the first floor and the entrance door. On the north facade, a small semicircular terrace with a balustrade railing was preserved, located next to the tower of the wall.

The rehabilitation project is based on the desire to preserve the essence and original character of Can Garcia, highlighting its structure, existing materials and relationship with the heritage context of Verges. At the same time, the action aims to explain and respect the evolutionary history of the house.
The intervention consisted of the comprehensive rehabilitation of the building and its horizontal division into four independent homes, maintaining the original bay structure and volume.

The main access to the complex is maintained through the central passageway on the west facade, which organizes the internal circulation of the building. The first floor, which corresponded to the main floor of the original house, is preserved as a single dwelling, incorporating the garden with pergola and the terrace on the south facade.

The second floor is divided into two smaller apartments, one facing south and the other north, each with its own terrace, taking advantage of the existing outdoor spaces.
On the ground floor, the old barn is transformed into a two-bedroom home with open and very bright spaces, thanks to the new south-facing terrace.

The project incorporates a new staircase and elevator core in the center of the building, which is formalized as an interior courtyard and light well, with a skylight on the roof that allows natural lighting and ventilation to all floors. This space also becomes a place of relationship, where each home has small interior facades with openings and glass doors for access.

The intervention seeks, ultimately, to give new life to Can Garcia without giving up its architectural memory and maintaining the link with its historical and urban context.
