We are an architecture workshop from Empordà that understands tradition as a source of wisdom and enjoyment as a way of life.

Founded in 1987 by two cousins, Auquer Prats is known for our deep knowledge of the Baix Ter area and the vernacular architectural tradition of the Empordà.

The obsession with understanding the history of our territory has led us to research everything from construction systems in the south of the Mediterranean to the systematic cataloguing of farmhouses, houses and villas ranging from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century.

This historical and technical base has allowed us to integrate ancestral wisdom into each of the more than 1,000 projects we have developed during our career. Our practice therefore starts from a deeply human base, which is supported by a 'know-how to live' integrated into the environment and the landscape.

Far from limiting ourselves to our region, this way of planning has led us to renovate, build and urbanize spaces in many places in Catalonia (Maresme, Tarragona, Bages, Osona, Barcelona...), the Spanish State (Almería, Huesca, Euskadi, Fuerteventura...) or other countries, such as Morocco.

Currently, two generations of architects live together in the office, complementing the ability to understand current needs with the experience of more than 35 years in the profession.

We adapt to the needs and lifestyle of our clients, designing single and multi-family spaces, with a special focus on traditional techniques and sustainability adapted to contemporary forms. You can read a little more about our methodology here. 

Rehabilitation and Expansion

We rehabilitate old farmhouses and town houses following restoration criteria that respect the original construction systems. Before intervening, we study the evolution of the historical structure of the building, adapting to it with the materials and construction techniques typical of each era. In addition, we incorporate new technologies in installations and alternative energies to improve the efficiency of our projects.

Interior design

Our concept of interior design is defined from the architectural conception, where the choice of materials, structures and construction systems determine the user experience. The interior finish arises from the constructive logic, without unnecessary additions, enhancing simplicity, functionality and the relationship with the exterior, from a careful selection of textures, colors and construction elements that bring character and personality to the space. We work with natural, artisanal and local materials.

Landscaping

The integration of man into the environment, and not the other way around, is our priority. We always start from what already exists, taking advantage of forest masses, dry stone walls, vegetated margins, paths, trails... We create outdoor spaces that favor outdoor life, incorporating elements such as pergolas, porches and transitional spaces that blur the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. We also promote the integration of productive green spaces, fostering self-sufficiency and biodiversity with low-maintenance orchards, fruit trees and native gardens. We apply sustainable water management strategies, with rainwater collection systems, natural ponds and biological treatment plants, contributing to a more balanced relationship between humans, their homes and nature.

Urban planning

We design public spaces from a sensitive and respectful perspective with the landscape and the original culture of the place. We work with an organic vision of the territory, understanding it as a living system: Our proposals respect the natural dynamics of transformation of the ecosystem and seek to enhance the values of each area, favoring a coherent and sustainable evolution, which does not erase the traces that civilization has left on the physical and symbolic surface, layer after layer. We draft projects for the rehabilitation of buildings on non-developable land, urban planning instruments such as PAE, PEU, PMU as well as other more complex planning figures of municipal organization.
